On January 9th, local time, the Lebanese Parliament held a presidential election. In the first round of voting, the main candidates failed to win a majority of votes. In the second round of voting, Lebanese Army Commander-in-Chief Joseph Aoun received 99 votes, more than two-thirds of the votes, and won the presidential election.
Joseph Aoun was born in 1964 into a Christian family. He is a career military officer who studied political science and international affairs at the Lebanese American University. Aoun joined the Lebanese Armed Forces in 1983 and began serving as Commander-in-Chief of the Lebanese Armed Forces in 2017.
Aoun was a man of outstanding military exploits. After he became the commander-in-chief of the Lebanese Armed Forces, he launched the military operation code-named "Suburban Dawn" on August 19th, 2017 to suppress the Islamic State(ISIS). In just one day and night, the Lebanese army recaptured 30 square kilometers of land from ISIS. By the end of August, all ISIS forces had withdrawn from Lebanon.
After Aoun was elected president of Lebanon, the United States, France, China, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Qatar and other Arab countries expressed their congratulations. Israeli Foreign Minister Sa'ar posted a message on social platforms, congratulating Lebanon on its successful election of a new president after a long-term political crisis, and hoping that this choice can promote stability, create a better future for Lebanon and its people, and at the same time enhance good relations between neighboring countries.
In his presidential inauguration speech, Aoun stated that he must ensure the state's right to monopolize weapons, which expressed his determination to completely disarm Hezbollah.
