Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn said that in order to boost Thailand's tourism industry, the Cabinet meeting passed the "Entertainment Complex Draft" which includes the legalization of casinos.
According to Paetongtarn, the bill was drafted by the Ministry of Finance and mainly includes the establishment of an entertainment complex policy committee and a management committee to manage various tourism facilities and institutions, including casinos, in order to attract investment and stimulate domestic tourism.
Regarding the disadvantages brought about by the legalization of casinos, Paetongtarn said that among Singapore’s entertainment complexes, casinos account for only 10%, and the remaining 80%-90% are other tourism projects. Regarding whether the bill will affect Thailand's national image, Paetongtarn said that the illegal gambling problem in Thailand is now very common. She hopes to combat illegal activities through legalization and better regulate the gambling industry. She suggested that the bill should be submitted to parliament as soon as possible and promised to strengthen communication with the public.
Reuters stated in the report that under current Thai law, casinos and most forms of gambling are illegal except for state-operated horse racing and lotteries, but illegal gambling is still widespread there. The report also mentioned that multiple Thai governments have tried to promote the legalization of gambling, and Paetongtarn’s father, former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, is an important supporter of this plan.
