Daniel Lurie, a Democrat and Levi's heir, took office as San Francisco's new mayor on Wednesday, vowing to upend the city's status quo and revitalize the city into a thriving technology and financial hub.
Speaking outside City Hall, Lurie said he planned to beef up police presence in tourist areas, spur much-needed housing development and declare a state of emergency over the fentanyl crisis to save lives.

"Widespread drug dealing, public drug use and constantly seeing people in crisis has robbed us of our sense of decency and security," Lurie told hundreds of people. In his speech, he described San Francisco as a city in trouble. Facing huge budget deficit but still not on the right path.
He chose to take a $1-a-year salary instead of the $383,000 mayoral salary. He also tapped San Francisco's many business and technology executives to assist in his efforts.
