Protesters rallied across the country over the weekend against Presidents Donald Trump and Elon Musk, calling for a defense of basic civil rights they say are under threat and an end to cuts in the size of government.
According to reports, more than 1,200 "Hands Off" demonstrations are planned for Saturday in all 50 states across the United States. Organizers include civil rights organizations, labor unions, LGBTQ advocates and veterans groups.
The rallies became the largest public demonstrations of opposition since Trump's second term. Photos and videos showed thousands of protesters gathering in downtown Boston, holding placards reading "Save our democracy" and "Leave Social Security alone" while in New York, marchers marched down Fifth Avenue.
"President Trump's position has been clear: He will always protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits for eligible people," the White House said in a statement about the protests. "At the same time, Democrats' position is to extend these benefits to illegal immigrants, which will bankrupt these programs and crush older Americans."
The White House said the president golfed in Florida on Saturday and planned to golf again on Sunday.
