Trudeau announces resignation

On January 6th, local time, Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau held a press conference in the capital Ottawa, announcing his resignation as leader of the ruling Liberal Party and requesting a parliamentary recess.According to the Associated Press and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, US President-elect Trump responded to Trudeau's statement on social media on the same day, continuing to mock Canada.

Trudeau said in a speech outside the Prime Minister's Office that day that he would remain as prime minister until the Liberal Party elected a successor. In response, Trump posted on social media, once again calling Canada the "51st state" of the United States. The Associated Press said that Trump also falsely claimed that Trudeau resigned because Canada relies on subsidies from the United States to survive.

"Many Canadians would love to become the 51st state. The United States can no longer tolerate the huge trade deficits and subsidies that Canada needs to survive. Trudeau knows this and he resigned." Trump wrote that if Canada merges with the United States, there will be no tariffs and taxes will be significantly reduced.

According to Reuters, the White House also commented on Trudeau's resignation in the coming months on the 6th. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, "Prime Minister Trudeau has been a staunch friend of the United States during his nearly ten years at the helm of the Canadian government, and we have worked closely on various issues."
