An earthquake in the New York City political scene, four deputy mayors resigned!

The New York City political scene continues to be shaken. On Monday (February 17th), four of New York City Mayor Eric Adams' top aides and deputy mayors resigned. Mayor Adams expressed his disappointment.

City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams also issued a statement calling for Adams to resign. She is the latest New York Democratic politician to come forward after the Department of Justice dropped corruption charges against Adams. They are dissatisfied with Adams because he cooperated with federal immigration enforcement in exchange for the Justice Department dropping the corruption indictment against him.

According to comprehensive news from multiple media, the four deputy mayors who resigned are: First Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer, Deputy Mayor for Operations Meera Joshi, Deputy Mayor for the Department of Health and Human Services Anne Williams Isom, and Deputy Mayor for Public Security Chauncey Parker.

Adams spoke with the four on Sunday in an attempt to prevent their departure, or at least delay their decision. Adams said in a statement to the media, "I am disappointed that they are leaving, but given the current challenges, I understand their decision and wish them success in the future."

Speaker Adrienne Adams issued a statement on the resignations of the deputy mayors, saying that their resignations were the consequences of the mayor's actions and decisions, and she also called on Adams to resign.

"With the resignation of the deputy mayors, it is clear that Mayor Adams has lost the confidence and trust of his own staff, his colleagues in government, and New Yorkers," Adrienne said in a statement. "He must now prioritize the City and New Yorkers, step down and resign. This administration under Adams's leadership as mayor is no longer equipped to govern effectively."

On the previous Sunday, Adams made it clear that he would not resign and "I am not going anywhere" despite continuous protests in New York City and people calling on Governor Hochul to remove Adams from office.

On Friday, Mayor Adams and Border Affairs Director Tom Homan appeared on Fox News and delivered speeches in support of the federal government. Top officials of the New York City government expressed dissatisfaction and were planning to resign.

The New York Post revealed that at least one other deputy mayor, Adams' chief spokesman Fabien Levy, may also resign.

After the Justice Department revealed last week that it would drop the Adams case, Danielle Sassoon, the prosecutor in the case, refused to accept the order to drop the case and resigned on Friday. Sassoon also revealed that Adams' lawyers had met with her to make dropping the case a condition for implementing the federal immigration program.

Adams and his attorney deny Sassoon's accusations. Subsequently, Hagan Scotten, another assistant prosecutor for the Southern District who was responsible for the Adams case, also resigned, saying that only fools or cowards would comply with the orders of the Department of Justice.

The Justice Department made a formal request to the judge late Friday to dismiss the mayor's criminal prosecution, but the judge has not yet responded.

New York state and city Democrats have called for Adams to resign. State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins told the media on Saturday that it might be time for him to quit.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stopped short of calling for the mayor to step down, but said Adams must be accountable to the community. He said Mayor Adams has a responsibility to convince New Yorkers that he will be able to continue to govern the city in a way that always puts the people's best interests first, rather than just taking orders from the Trump administration and the Trump Justice Department.

A rally in support of Adams was held at a Brooklyn church on Monday afternoon. According to the New York Morning Post, supporters praised Adams’ performance and leadership in policing and employment, with people shouting: Four more years!
