Recently, South Korea's leading game manufacturer Krafton announced that the top-down tactical shooting game "Project Ark" developed by PUBG Studios has been officially named "PUBG: Blind Spot" and has been put on the Steam store. The game will participate in this quarter’s “Steam Next Fest” (Steam New Product Festival, which will be held from February 25th to March 4th), and PUBG Studios will provide players with a free trial version starting from February 21st.
Focus on PVP, tactical shooting from a top-down perspective
"PUBG: Blind Spot" is a team-centered top-down shooting game focusing on 5v5 PvP battles. Judging from the introduction on the Steam store page, "PUBG: Blind Spot" is inspired by "PUBG" and will provide a rich library of weapons in the game, including but not limited to assault rifles, submachine guns, shotguns, sniper rifles, precision shooter rifles, pistols and grenade launchers, etc. Each weapon has its own unique performance characteristics and operating feel, ultimately providing players with a realistic fast-paced top-down shooting experience.
Different from ordinary FPS/TPS shooting games, "PUBG: Blind Spot", as a top-down perspective game, has a wider field of view, showing the surrounding environment more clearly. The most important thing is that it can share the field of view with teammates like a MOBA game. The field of view that players and their teammates can see is actually a circular area around and a fan - shaped area in front. When there are obstacles in front of the player or the player takes cover, the corresponding forward field of view will be blocked.
From this perspective, although "PUBG: Blind Spot" is a top-down shooting game, the game content is actually quite realistic, and due to the control of the field of view, as a team competitive game, can also have a certain depth of tactical design and competitive playability.
The second is indoor counter-terrorism CQB (indoor close quarters combat). The main gameplay includes destroying the scene, interfering with the enemy's line of sight, quickly approaching the enemy to launch an attack, or achieving other tactical purposes. Compared with the CQB gameplay in traditional FPS games (such as "Rainbow Six", etc.), the CQB gameplay in the overhead shooting mode will pay more attention to the impact of environmental changes on the field of vision.
Hardcore shooting game streamlined
It is worth mentioning that "PUBG: Blind Spot" participated in G-Star, South Korea's largest game show last year, and provided offline trials for players present (the project was still called "Project Ark" at the time). Judging from the feedback from players who participated in the game test, "PUBG: Blind Spot", as a top-down shooting game, rarely included the Z-axis.
In other words, when aiming, in addition to locking the enemy's position on the 2D plane through the auxiliary line, the player also needs to adjust the shooting elevation vertically. This allows for precise headshots.
This also improves the playability of "PUBG: Blind Spot" to a certain extent, but in any case, compared to ordinary FPS and TPS shooting games, the threshold for top-down shooting games is much lower. This is first reflected in being more friendly to players who are dizzy with 3D. At present, most of the competitive shooting games (including "PUBG") are based on realistic painting style. Especially for first - person FPS games, the phenomenon of 3D motion sickness is more pronounced. However, in top - down perspective shooting games, the issue of 3D motion sickness hardly exists.
Secondly, the operation threshold is relatively low. After all, whether it is FPS or TPS, they are both relatively hardcore competitive games. Players' aiming abilities, including gun - dragging positioning, recoil control, pre - aiming, etc., require a great deal of practice and a certain amount of gaming talent. This leads to a relatively high threshold for shooting competitive games. In particular, the high difficulty of getting started means that players are easily discouraged during the novice period.
Krafton, as a manufacturer that promotes the PUBG game category, obviously knows the pros and cons of typical 3D shooting games very well. Choosing to make "PUBG: Blind Spot" a top - down perspective game is evidently an attempt to streamline the relatively hardcore shooting games, thus attracting more casual players from a broader user base.
On the other hand, top-down games are also more convenient to port to mobile terminals. Although Krafton has not yet made it clear whether this game will be ported to mobile game platforms or made into a cross-terminal game in the future, it at least retains this possibility. After all, the difficulty of operating FPS games on the mobile terminal is obviously much higher than that of operating top-down shooting games.
