8 to 0, Yoon Suk Yeol was removed from office, South Korea will hold a presidential election within 60 days

At 10:00 am on April 4th, the Constitutional Court of South Korea made a ruling on the impeachment of Yoon Suk Yeol. The Constitutional Court believed that Yoon Suk Yeol abused his power, failed to comply with legal procedures, failed to perform his duties, and went against the people he was supposed to protect when declaring martial law. The Constitutional Court believed that there was no national emergency for the implementation of martial law at the time, and that the martial law order undermined people's political rights and violated the basic principles of democracy and the rule of law.

The eight judges of the Constitutional Court unanimously agreed to remove Yoon Suk Yeol from the presidency, making him the former president.

According to reports, Yoon Suk Yeol will lose his judicial immunity, and the South Korean prosecutors may speed up the handling of Yoon Suk Yeol's criminal case involving sedition, which could result in a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. The corruption case involving Yoon Suk Yeol's wife, Kim Keon-hee, may escalate simultaneously.

After Yoon Suk Yeol was removed from office, he and his wife Kim Keon-hee may face a series of judicial investigations and charges for "abuse of power", "economic crimes" and "election interference". Yoon Suk Yeol's sentence may set a new record for the highest sentence ever given to a former South Korean president.

The Seoul Central District Court in South Korea previously announced that the first public trial of Yoon Suk Yeol on suspicion of "civil sedition" will be held on April 14th.

According to Article 68, Paragraph 2 of the South Korean Constitution, a new president must be elected within 60 days after the vacancy of the president, so the next presidential election must be held no later than June 3rd. Han Duck-soo will serve as acting president until the new president takes office.
