Interim leader of South Korea's ruling party Kwon Young-se officially takes office

Yonhap News Agency, Seoul, December 30th. Kwon Young-se, chairman (interim leader) of the Emergency Countermeasures Committee of the ruling party PPP(People Power Party) of South Korea, officially took office on the 30th.

 

The People Power Party held a national committee meeting online that day and voted to approve Kwon Young-se’s appointment. This is 27 days since the "December 3 Emergency Martial Law Incident" and two weeks since the resignation of former party leader Han Dong-hoon.

 

The appointment of members of the Emergency Response Committee will be voted on on the 31st. After the appointment is approved by a vote, the People Power Party will transfer to an interim leadership system headed by interim leader Kwon Young-se. It is reported that the emergency response committee will be composed of 7 people including Kwon Young-se, party whip Kweon Seong-dong, and policy committee chairman Kim Sang-hoon.

 

Kwon Young-se will not hold an inauguration ceremony that day, but go to Muan Airport, where a major accident occurred the day before, to express condolences to the families of the victims. According to the Party Constitution and Rules of the People Power, the activity period of the Emergency Response Committee is 6 months, which can be extended once to one year by resolution of the National Committee.
